The Lutheran Women's Missionary League

of

The English District

The English District is one of two non-geographic districts of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Its inception can be traced to colonial times. When the district was formally organized in 1888, there were few parishes in the Missouri Synod which used English. Thus English is a historic name. Today there are 170 English District congregations in two Canadian provinces and in seventeen states, from Florida to Minnesota, from New Jersey to California, in inner-city and suburbs, ministering in ten different languages. The English District seeks to help in situations where other districts cannot carry out their goals and need assistance. The English District has consistently opened more new missions than any other district of the Synod.

The LWML of the English District was formed in 1944. It currently is comprised of 62 societies in eleven states. For sixty God-blessed years, the organization has been equipping women to live out their Christian lives in active mission ministries and to financially support missions. The English District LWML encourages women to lead rich spiritual lives, to find avenues for service, to mentor their sisters in Christ, and to maintain a mission consciousness as they meet the challenge to share the Gospel message on a daily basis.

Mission Statement

To unite the women of the English District so that each one is strengthened in her relationship with the Triune God and enabled to use her gifts in service to the Lord.

Biennium Goals

2006 - 2008

  • To nourish women of all ages through the Word so their lives may reflect the love of Jesus.
  • To reach out to people of all cultures as we learn together and share in the mission of the LWML.
  • To increase mite giving through mission awareness.
  • To establish more LWML societies in English District congregations.
  • To train more women to be leaders in the English District LWML.

For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.
2 Corinthians 4:6-7
